Behavior is consistently careless, hostile Despite misconceptions, most people with anxiety, depression and bizarre thinking pose  no immediate danger  The Elusive Nature of Abnormality Ultimately a society selects general criteria for defining abnormality and uses those  criteria to judge particular cases Szasz believes that mental illness is a myth, and places emphases on society’s role We are unable to apply definition consistently Alcoholism is overlooked in college students because it is considered normal, but  someone might be a serious alcoholic Eccentric vs. abnormality Owning 2 dozen cats, etc.   What is treatment? Treatment, or therapy is a procedure designed to change abnormal behavior into more  normal behavior It is given after clinicians decide person is indeed suffering from psychological  abnormality All forms of therapy have three essential features: A sufferer, who seeks relief A trained, socially acceptable healer A series of contacts between the healer and sufferer

Therapists are not in agreement as to their goals or aims What is success and what is failure?  - Different in different clinicians Some view abnormality as an illness (patient) and consider therapy a procedure that  helps cure the illness Others see abnormality as a problem in living (client) and therapists as teachers of  functional behavior and thought How was Abnormality Viewed and Treated in the Past? Every society, past and present, has witnessed psychological abnormality Pressures of modern life probably do contribute to abnormality but they are hardly the  primary cause Ancient Views and Treatment All events resulted from actions of magical, sometimes sinister beings in the world Abnormal behavior caused by a victory in evil spirits, cure was to force demons from  body Trephination – creating a hole in the skull, possibly to release evil spirits Later societies such as Egyptian, Chinese and Hebrew viewed demons as a cause of  abnormality Treatment consisted of exorcism, coaxing the evil spirit to leave body
