LOWER BACK INJURIES REPORTED BY THE UNLOADING CREW Manual handling injuries are not limited to those sustained by lifting or carrying heavy loads. A person can be injured when handling objects in a variety of ways including pulling, pushing, holding or restraining or in this case unloading stock. Good posture and lifting techniques can help reduce the risks. The back is particularly vulnerable to manual handling injuries. All workers will receive clear and adequate information on the weight of a load, the centre of gravity, or the heaviest side of the goods. Safety suggestions include: Warm up cold muscles with gentle stretches before engaging in any manual work. Lift and carry heavy loads correctly by keeping the load close to the body and lifting with the thigh muscles. Never attempt to lift or carry loads if you think they are too heavy.- PLEASE SPEAK to another co worker of your manager Pushing a load (using your body weight to assist) will be less stressful on your body than pulling a load. Ask the forklift driver to lift or carry a heavy load whenever possible. One basic rule for lifting and carrying is to keep the load as close to the body as possible. In order to get a broad load close to the body, the worker has to open the arms to reach and hold the load. The arm muscles cannot produce force when reaching as effectively as with the arms held in close. Thus, the muscles will get tired more rapidly when handling a large bulky load Managers will review the work area to reduce the amount of bending, twisting and stretching required- Employee input will be needed Take frequent breaks. Managers will arrange will rotated shifts for unloading when needed Cool down after heavy work with gentle, sustained stretches Exercise regularly to strengthen muscles and ligaments.
