either agree or disagree. Some stronger than others of course. The part of the writing that results in emotions is the very last paragraph. Herman writes that Austin, Texas is starting a new year of people having to accept others for who they are – especially people with this kind of authority. He also writes that it was the people’s choice to vote for “somebody not precisely like themselves” (Herman, E1). In this article Herman gains his trust from his audience by bringing in outside sources and statistics. This leads to the idea of Ethos. He pulls up statistics of the population of Austin and states that “34 percent are Hispanic, 7 percent are African-American and 6 percent are Asian” (Herman, E1). This really shows who the people are of Austin are and how this resulted in a diverse city council. Herman included things that people have said as well. This includes what Symone Sanders, “former spokeswoman for Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign,” “’In
my opinion, we don’t need white people leading the Democratic Party right now” (Herman, E1). This shows Herman’s credibility. Now going into Logos, I believe that Ken Herman’s message is logical. He is straight forward and backs up his reasoning to prove his credibility. He is very clear in what he believes – having a diverse council is not a problem at all in a Republican state. In his writing, he shows that America is starting to accept others who are of different sexualities. I believe that Herman’s appeal of Pathos is the most effective in his opinion piece. Having statistics is a great way to back up one’s opinion and getting ones’ message across is very important, but I see that bringing emotion to the audience is the most important in this writing. It draws in the audience and makes them keep on reading as they are interested in what Herman has to say. It really opens someone’s mind to think about what is happening around us and shows us how we have grown as a whole.
