Note places where the author is “in conversation” with other theorists. If we have read/discussed these theorists, it might be useful to return to the readings or your notes from these other writers in order to follow the specific points being discussed. If we have not read them, consider what you think you need to know about this other work in order to more fully understand the piece you are considering. Does the writer present any kind of summary of the other writer’s work that should be read more closely? Summarize what you have read in a single paragraph. Take 5-10 minutes to write this up right after you’ve finished reading. This serves a similar function as margin writing, but is cumulative. (The critical reflections serve this function.)

Compare your understanding of the text prior to the lecture discussion of it with that after. Are there points that remain unclear? Has your sense of the text’s meaning changed? Do you agree or disagree with the class’s consensus on the meaning of the text (if there was a consensus). What were the most controversial or difficult points about the text?
