There were many happenings during this time that affect the Legacy of the state of Michigan, One is the development of the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad was a secret transportation used to transport runaway slaves into Canada. It was name the Underground Railroad due to the use of railroad terminology in its messages. Another development is the development of the Sault Ste. Marie Canal. As a result of the mining in Michigan, the Canal was constructed in order to allow the ships to easily move from Lake Superior into Lake Huron. On major change during this era that affects the legacy of Michigan is the fact that Michigan actually became a state. The original capital of Michigan was Detroit, however it was changed to village in Lansing Township, which was decided to be called Lansing. Detroiters wanted to keep Detroit as the capital, however, critics argued that it was too close to Canada, which was not optimal if there were another war with England and that Detroit was not centrally located. There were also the development of many universities during this time, including the University of Michigan, University of Detroit, as well as the Michigan School of Mines, now known as the Michigan Technological University,
