It is a necessary part of successful communication o Can change depending on context even with the same people
Collaboration o We portray an identity so do the people we communicate with o You react … others react … you react o Remember the transactional nature of communication Deliberate or unconscious o Unintentional vs intentional element o Facial expressions and other non verbal This doesn’t mean that all our behaviou is scripted o We script communication in general o Those who script in specific often have problems Situational variability o Vary the degree of management from situation to situation Self Monitoring o The tendency to pay attention to and regulate one’s behaviour to meet the demands of communication situations o High self monitors vs Low self monitors How do we manage our identity Manner o Context is critical o Non-verbal Appearance o Perssonal items used to shape your image o Clothing, tattoos, hairstyle (or lack thereof) Setting o Physical items we use to portray a specific identity Why do we manage our identity Natural adaptation o Allows us to change our presentation to our perception of the needs of others Chapter 3 – Perception Human beings have a need to make sense of the world o We take information and do something with it Perception is an ACTIVE process used to create meaning o Selection, Organization, Interpretation o Textbook includes Negotiation as a 4 th step we will consider Perception as a 3 step process that continually cycles. We are NOT passive observers o We only process a subset of the avilable information The 3 step process is fluid and all steps are blended together o Partly conscious and partly unconscious ***Very important*** Words themselves have no meaning – so where does meaning come from?
The meaning of any message lies in the reciever. Always every time If I tell a joke that I think is funny and you perceive it to be offensive, then to YOU, I am being offensive REGARDLESS of my intent Your job as a responsible communicator is to ensure that you are communicating as best as you can so that people will percieve what you want them to but there are NO guarantees. BUT always remember that communication is NOT a one way process it is a transactional process with a minumum of two participants and always remember that receivers have responsibility in communication as well. … YOU (as a reciever) have the responsibility to check your perceptions and YOU have a responisbility to determine how you arrived at a particular interpretation Three step perception process: Selection We only attend to some things in our world o We simplify the context we live in STOP o Think of all the things going on around you right now o How many were you aware of before you consciously tried to attend to them? How do we select information Some qualities “stand out” draw your attention o Change/contrast o Repetition o Louder/larger/brighter Deliberate influence (conscious decisions) Current area of interest
