Midterm Paper - Team Effectiveness

Overall the success of our team throughout the season

This preview shows 6 out of 7 pages.

Overall, the success of our team throughout the season was affected by three factors more than the others . The competency of our team members allowed us to function as a well-oiled machine and to surpass the teams that challenged us . The standards that we were held to helped us keep up our performance and stay focused on the goal in mind . Above all else, the knowledge and leadership we received from our coach, Shane Latham, was what inspired us and led us to be the team that we were . Our ultimate failure in achieving our goal, however, was a result of egos, both personal and as a team . We allowed ourselves to get cocky and selfish and we stopped acting like a team and start acting like a group of individuals on a field at the same time . My Role As far as my competency as a member of the team is concerned, I had varying strengths and weaknesses in my ability to contribute . After over twelve years of playing the game I had strong technical skills, though I was not as naturally athletic as some of the other members of our team, and a vast knowledge of what to do in most situations . I was a focused player . My head was in every game that I played, analyzing every option and every move . I was not, however,

Bourke much of a problem solver on the team . I was not a decisive person on the field and that led to inaction on the field and in making changes to benefit the team . When it comes to personal competencies, I have many strengths . I am a very open person. I have the ability to easily open lines of communication and I am very willing to listen to any criticisms or problems and talk them out to work through them . I was a very supportive player . As the first player off the bench in most games, my entire role was based around supporting my teammates . I had to be helpful and ready to play when I was on the field, and I had to be encouraging when to everyone when I was on the bench . In my position I had to manage my ego and take a back seat to eleven other people that were seen as stronger players than me, which was never a problem . I was a fun and very relaxed member of the team . I was often looked to for a joke or to lighten the mood when things got a little tense in dealing with other team members . I took a level-headed and optimistic approach to the circumstances that we were under; in doing so I never let my effort falter even when things started to go wrong . This helped to inspire my teammates that were beginning to give up . My main weakness though when it came to my personal competency was that I was not very action oriented . I am not a risk taker, and therefore consistently went with the safer and sometimes less progressive route on the team . . Instead of creating new opportunities, I often found myself taking the ones that were already present, even if they did not advance the team . I set high standards for myself, but instead of taking action to improve and reach those standards, I was far too often content with the status quo . Overall I consider myself to be a significant part of the team and one of the many reasons that we did as well as we did . I had my strengths and weaknesses much like anyone else, but I was able to use my strengths in a role that allowed them to outshine my weaknesses .

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
