Siebel Business Process Framework: Workflow Guide Version 8.1, Rev A Options for Developing a Workflow Process Handling Errors 164 Handling Errors This topic includes the following topics: Using an Error Exception Connector to Handle Errors on page 164 Using a Stop Step to Handle Errors on page 168 Error Handling with an Error-Workflow Process on page 168 Recovery for a Workflow Process That Has Failed on page 171 An error is a deviation from the normal or expected flow of a workflow process. An error can be generated by the system or by an end user. You can use error handling to notify the end user of an error and terminate the instance of a workflow. For information about using a process property when handling errors, see “Passing a Process Property to an Error-Workflow Process” on page 58 . Using an Error Exception Connector to Handle Errors An error exception connector is a type of connector that is designed to handle system and user generated errors. An example of an error that is generated by the system is a failure that occurs when an email notification is sent. An example of an error that is generated by an end user is an attempt to submit an order that is not complete. You can use an error exception connector to programmatically handle errors and change the flow that is pursued in a workflow process, depending on whether an error is encountered. This technique provides a granular approach to handling an exception at each step. If an error occurs, then the error code and error message are automatically populated in the Error Code and Error Message process properties. An error exception connector allows you to set up a decision condition by using values in these properties. In the Process Designer, an error exception connector is displayed as a red connector between two steps. If you click an error exception connector, then the Properties window displays the WF Step Branch properties for the connector. Similar to other cases where a decision condition is used in a workflow process, exception logic for a step is evaluated after the step finishes. If you must evaluate an exception before execution of a step, then you must attach the error exception connector to the prior step in the workflow. Example of Error Exception Handling This topic gives one example of defining error exception handling. You might use this feature differently, depending on your business model.

Options for Developing a Workflow Process Handling Errors Siebel Business Process Framework: Workflow Guide Version 8.1, Rev A 165 In the example displayed in Figure 18 , If the Get Organization ID step is unable to get data, then the workflow process continues to the Lookup Sender by Org step. If Lookup Sender by Org fails, then the workflow pursues the red exception connector, and sends an email by using the Send Lookup Error Email step.
