How could I complain about that?” • “They pay bonuses late and the pay raises are late too, both in late February/early March.” Quality of Work • “The first week I was here I was entrusted to work independently on an investigation that had broad implications for our client. No one turned me away when I had a question and everyone genuinely wanted me to succeed. Especially the talent development department at Paul Hastings which goes out of its way to make sure you are on track. No assignment that I have been given so far has been mundane or uninteresting. The work here at the DC office is high stakes and cutting edge.” • “From my first day, I’ve been given very challenging work. In my first year, I’ve drafted memos and emails for clients and sections of briefs. Expectations for associates are high, and the level of work reflects those high expectations.” • “Obviously work assignments are constrained by the stage of the litigations that group is working on. That being said, the partners consistently looking to give associates the opportunities they need to develop. As an example, I had not taken a fact deposition as a rising fourth year associate and specifically requested I be given the opportunity. This year I took six fact depositions.” • “I was drafting dispositive motions within my first six months on the job. I do very little doc review.” Training & Mentoring • “The firm has a formal training system for all incoming associates, both in the home office and an all associate retreat to meet new associates and general training. I also feel able to drop in anyone’s office at anytime and ask questions.” • “Paul Hastings has a formalized mentoring program. A senior associate from my department regularly meets with me to discuss career goals. We also regularly socialize at lunches and over drinks.” • “The firm provides a plethora of opportunities for formal training and partners take pride in setting aside time for individual instruction and feedback. It’s part of the culture.” • “The firm has a good amount of formal training. The firm sponsors CLE events. I also was able to attend a NITA deposition training. There’s no formal program for one-on- one mentoring, though I have found partners that I go to for guidance.” Career Outlook • “The firm is very honest about the fact that many juniors will eventually transition out. It therefore supports us in considering in-house positions, figuring that support is preferable to burning bridges. One of our associates left for an in-house position a few years back and recently came back, armed with new experience. We even get monthly emails detailing in-house positions available at our clients and other sources the firm has seen.” • “Promotion to partnership from the ranks is achievable, though it does not happen for many. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
