It was impossible to grow crops, and the colony experienced a decade long drought. By 1590, no a soul was left. The Virginia Company later sent over more settlers, thinking that the Pacific lie on the other side of the colony. They called for carpenters, blacksmiths, glassmakers, etc. But sent over no farmers. The settlers began dying of disease, especially dysentery. Each year 1/4 of the people died out. Jamestown was somewhat saved by Captain John Smith, who began teaching people how to farm and adapt to the new world. The Indians let the colony be because the colonists were killing themselves off anyways.
