- Acetylcholine, Dopamine, and Norepinephrine What changes occur in the nervous system with aging: There is a loss of neurons with aging, and brain weight may drop considerably after age 70. Is there any loss of intellectual function attributable to this loss of neurons? - No The number of functioning dendrites with aging, what does this decrease cause? - Slower impulse transmission and resultant slower reaction time in the older person. Blood flow to the brain is decreased with advanced age; what does this make the elderly more susceptible to? - To permanent damage if blood flow to the brain is further compromised. What can loss of neurons and slower nerve conduction cause? - A decrease in efficiency of the autonomic nervous system in advanced age. What changes can occur in late adulthood? - Slower movement, slower response time, and decreased sensation. - Tremors may occur without rigidity and tendon reflexes may be hypoactive Why is more difficult to maintain or regain in the elderly? - Body homeostasis What can happen if the elderly is exposed to prolonged cold or to excessive heat? - May cause death Recent, short-term memory is affected by the aging process, but long-term, distant memory is? - Often not affected. Is the learning ability affected by aging? - No, but the learning process is slower - It takes longer to process new information - Abstract reasoning ability slowly diminished with advanced age, and perception may become impaired. What causes affects cognitive function, gait, and balance? - Decreases in secretion of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine occur with advanced age, and there is an increase in monoamine oxidase.
Why is more light needed for reading? - Pupils decrease in size When interviewing or assessing an elderly patient, what should the nurse take in consideration? - Elderly may need more time to process question, solve problems, or learn new information. - HAVE PATIENCE!!!!! What does using the brain and keeping it active promote? - Continued intellectual function in the healthy elderly individual HEALTH PROMOTION: - Encourage people to wear helmets when biking, in-line skating, skateboarding, or riding motorcycles, and when involved in other sports activities that may lead to head injury. - Remind people that wearing safety hats or helmets when in a workplace where head injury is a danger does reduce the number of injuries. - Review safety precautions when diving and swimming. To help prevent spinal cord injury, never dive into water of unknown depth. - Encourage people to fasten their seat belts before putting the car into gear. - Be certain that children are fastened into appropriate restraints. - Wear mask, gloves, long pants, and long-sleeved shirt when spraying with insecticide; wash up immediately afterward and change clothes.
