coral reefs around the world help prevent natural disasters (such as floods) from occurring. These coral reefs are important in areas such as Florida, Guam, Hawaii (my two home states), and the Caribbean. With the help of coral reefs they can protect the United States from flood damages as a result in saving at least $1.8 Billion dollars which can be used for other political and social issues we are currently facing. Although man-made defenses can be used as alternatives, none are completely effective like coral reefs. II. Social Commentary/Opinion: It’s nice to see that people have finally acknowledged coral reefs use of protection. Not only do they provide shelter for certain organisms and aquatic life they also help prevent flood conditions from becoming more chaotic than they need to be. Coral reefs also act as a cost-effective tool from spending more money on storm relief aid for those who have been hit by the natural disaster. I feel that if we came up with more natural and efficient ways for our infrastructure to not harm the environment (as bad as it is already) we could then implement the use of super-corals (mentioned in the first journal entry) to help rebuild a more heat resistant reef but still sustain it’s natural properties. Journal Entry #3: Hawaii Officials Say Sunscreen Chemicals Damaging Coral Reefs. 29 April, 2019. Travel Pulse. Donald Wood. I. Summary: Hawaii is one of the most visited “get-away” spots for any type of vacation. As many people come and visit the islands of Hawaii, full of it’s beaches and beautiful scenic views, palm trees and colorful sunsets. Along with the humid weather, you’re bound to stay outdoors rather than cooped up inside. Many people use sunscreen as a protectant from the harmful UV rays the sun gives off. These harmful UV rays can potentially give you skin cancer. However, when tourists first come into the water, the sunscreen naturally washes off due to it’s non water resistant consistency. With the high levels of sunscreen washing off into the oceans. A recent study conducted on the Big Island found high concentration levels of oxybenzone in it’s waters. Oxybenzone and octinoxate (both chemicals found in sunscreen and tanning products) is linked to the damage of coral reefs. Hawaii’s government officials have now regulated the usage of these products with the oxybenzone and octinoxate in hopes of preventing any further damage to the reefs. II. Social Commentary/Opinion: Due to Hawaii’s popularity among tourists it has conclusively added the amount of usage of sunscreen and tanning products. I’ve researched the different types of brands and levels of SPF (all of the products viewed contained the two chemicals) and so far there has not been an “All natural sunscreen” that protects from the Sun’s UV rays. However, with the Hawaiian Government Officials putting off on the usage of these products

and the various levels of which contain oxybenzone and octinoxate, we can use a different, cheaper, and healthier alternative which can also contribute to not polluting the water systems. Aloe Vera can be used to heal and treat irritated skin, however it can be resistant to
