March 3, 2014 Kai Hwang, USC 44 Map Apps on Mobile Devices xrhombus The Maps apps has been featured on the iOS since the release of the first iPhone in 2007, and was powered by Google Maps from then until 2012. xrhombus A new version was announced at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2012 that Apple will no longer use Google Maps. Instead, the map apps would be provided by other providers. xrhombus The new providers are through a Dutch navigation system TomTom, and an AutoNavi by a Chinese mapping company. This move signaled Apple's effort to compete with Google's Android in the mapping arena.
