turn authority into power and govern effectively, the emperor needed the cooperation of the ruling elite to secure the compliance of the people. Much politics of the late imperial periods was fueled by struggles between aristocrats and monarchists bent on centralizing power. In the empires, the emperor and the ruling elites gradually came to terms with each other. Together they evolved autocracy at the expense of the people. (Auyang, 2014) 2. Why do you think cultural influences flowed primarily from China to Japan and Korea and not the reverse? Cultural influences flowed primarily from China to Japan and Korea because Japan’s relations with China and Korea were close through most of its early history. However, they were punctuated with brief periods of self-willed isolation. Most of the models of japanese culture can be traced to chinese sources, which often came though Korea. Some of Japan’s notable borrowings from China were Buddhism, writing and several art media and forms. (Adler & Pouwels, pg. 268, 2018) 3. For what reasons do you think the Japanese limited contacts with China from time to time? I believe they had limited contact from time to time because the partial severance of relations with china following the establishment of the capital Heian allowed the Japanese full freedom to develop their own culture. (Adler & Pouwels, pg. 249, 2018) Both their languages were radically different in both structure and vocabulary. References: Auyang, S. Y. (2014, May).
