up inside your eye. If the pressure is not relived in some way it can lead to blindness within a matter of years. It’s important to get an eye exam at least once a year because there are no early symptoms or pain associated with glaucoma. If you have a family member that has glaucoma, it’s also important to get yearly exams as it can be inherited. It tends to affect people age 40 and above and if you happen to be of African-American or Hispanic descent you are at greater risk. As I said before there are no real signs, but some symptoms may include loss of side vision, eye pain and headaches. If you’ve ever gone to the eye doctor and had them dilate your eyes, he/she is checking your optic nerve for swelling and he/she will also check for any eye pressure. If you are diagnosed with Glaucoma there are several ways to treat it that include eye drops which would reduce the fluid in the optic nerve, and laser surgery which could help the flow of the fluid. Unfortunately, there is no prevention of the disease, but it can be controlled if it is diagnosed in its early stage.
