In addition, the duties of the secretariat also include the representation of the school in diverse contexts, keeping in contact with the PhD candidates’ supervisors, assisting foreign students, coordinating the teaching, and con- ducting part of the teaching. The directors as well as the assistant coordinator will function both as teachers within the research school and as researchers within the REMESO programme, thereby enabling good communi- cation and exchange between research and education. The institutional setting of the Research School on Mi- gration, Economy and Society will be the Institute of So- cial and Welfare Studies (ISV). ISV provides the neces- sary research infrastructure as well as a faculty staff of more than 150 persons with complementary compe- tences of relevance for the curriculum of the school. The Research School in Migration, Economy and Society adds new and pivotal aspects to the already existing PhD programmes as well as the overall research agenda at ISV. research school fits well into the study and research programme of ISV, and the Institution will further the development of the school and facilitate its integration into the existing academic environment at ISV in every possibly way. Curriculum and activities There is little gainsaying that the challenges posed by migration will continue to be on the national, suprana- tional and global agendas in the future decades to come. In line with the research foci of REMESO this broad de- velopment and problematic will also occupy the centre stage of the research school’s activities. The following constitutes a description of courses that will be given by the research school. Introductory course in Migration, economy and soci- ety (9 ECTS) Theory course: a) Migration and ethnicity; b) Econ- omy and work; c) Globalization, European integration and the national welfare state (18 ECTS) Methodology course (9 ECTS) International migration, globalisation, work and trans- national networks (7 ECTS) The research fields – Individual choice (7 ECTS) Although subject to changes and additions, this curricu- lum nonetheless constitutes the core of the school’s ac- tivities and courses. It reflects the aim of providing re- search students with a solid theoretical and methodologi- cal knowledge, as well as a comprehensive grasp of the empirically oriented scholarship within the field. Whereas the theory course centres on a theoretical understanding of the interactions between national, supranational and global levels, the course in methodology will be designed according to a broad plan which, firstly, affords an im- portant familiarity with methodological questions perti- nent to the research field, and, secondly, gets comple- mented by a section that targets more specifically the students’ own thesis topics.
