that is Christianity. This is a contradiction of a Secular society where all religions are equally voiced, and is evidence itself that true secularisation does not exist in Britain. The broad claim that religion is in decline is clearly even with the evidence showing a steady decline in church attendance in most Western countries including the United States, but with the rise in non-traditional and holistic approaches maybe instead of declining religion is just updating for the 21 st Century; coming out of the church and in to the home. Where church leaders are no longer put on pedestals but invited to debate as an equal. This paired with the large amount of sociocultural issues and developments explain the growth and decline of religion. For example, the rise in educational standards coupled with the many different types of religion available, now that society has so many ways of communication 24/7, they are not restrained by the church in their neighbourhood but can choose a religion from across the globe, obviously having an impact on church attendance. This factor also provides evidence for the rise of atheism, secularism and humanism, as people investigate faith for themselves, no longer relying on teachings of the local minister telling them what to think and see. Secularisation is one of many contested concepts, that creates controversial theoretical debates about what it is, how to should be measured and finally whether it is actually happening or not. Secularisation at first glance seems to have won the war between itself and religious domination, however when it is investigated further it is possible to see that the issue is more complicated. Secularisation as it was originally intended did not come to full fruition, the masses modernised, gained momentous advancements in technology and medicine while also remaining religious, contradicting the sociological thinkers of the 19 th century who predicted its eventual 6

and inevitable decline and removal from public discourse, this opinion is further questioned by the rise in religious schools in the West for Muslims, Catholics and Jews. With religion having a renaissance in the 21 st Century, there are some striking changes that need to be considered such as the people’s desire for policy and legislation to be created using rational, calculated information; not by spiritual advisors looking to the scriptures, thus supporting the Secularisation theory of governing. Secularism can succeed, and may in fact be the only way for modern society to succeed and flourish in today’s multi-faith world. A secular government would protect minorities of all faiths and no-faith, allowing each one its voice, Politicians would also be able to state their religion but have to ensure it doesn’t influence their governmental roles. In today’s UK government discussing religion is distasteful, and in France it is banned outright in government; meaning that the so- called secular government is in fact not secular. With Islam on the rise, and the
