Academic and professional integrity have a strong connection to each other because they go hand in hand, you cannot have one without the other. To have academic integrity in writing, one must be responsible for his/her own work and capable of accurately citing the work of others to avoid plagiarism. In addition, there is a direct relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics in that when practicing nursing, the goal is to give the best possible care to all patients by following a certain code of morals, which include honestly, respect, loyalty, and accountability. According to one of Walden’s videos, “academic and professional integrity are one and the same”, meaning that once you obtain academic integrity, you will carry out that same integrity professionally as a practicing nurse (Laureate Education, 2018). Some of the ways SafeAssign and paraphrasing contribute to academic integrity is by making sure you are accountable for your own work and giving credit to others when it is necessary by correctly paraphrasing and citing those sources. Also, Grammarly is a great tool for academic improvement because it gives students
writing feedback with an overall performance score, which includes correctness, clarity, engagement, and delivery. Utilizing this tool will not only improve scholarly writing but also contribute to academic integrity as well. In addition to academic integrity, professional integrity also comes in to play. In the field of nursing, it is expected nurses represent the highest level of integrity by remaining honest, respectful, and loyal to the patient population. According to a recent article, “the nursing profession has an obligation to prepare nurses for the ethical morass of clinical practice; and high-quality ethics pedagogy should be an essential component of nursing education” (Bahrieni, Azodi, Hajivandi, and Jahanpour, 2017). The connection between academic and professional integrity remains true, that if you have one you will have the other. For example, academic integrity is obtained by having the ability to remain honest and respectful by taking accountability for your own work and recognizing the work of others when necessary with the use of paraphrasing and citing. When academic integrity is established, it is expected to hold that same level of integrity professionally as a practicing nurse. The essence of nursing is to uphold a certain code of ethics including integrity, honesty, and trust in order for patients to receive the best possible care.
