Symbols can also be metaphors for example in the novel The Great Gatsby it mentions the green light and that symbol is a metaphor for envy and despair and the blue garden represents sadness and loneliness. The thing about symbols that are used as a metaphor is the authors kinda make it there own. Symbols are not ust little hits in the book to get you thinking there are so many different symbols. Symbols are also used to create a bigger idea to get the reader's attention. In the novel The Great Gatsby by F Scott. Fitzgerald it talks about this town called the Valley of Ashes"This is a valley of ashes—a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and, finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air" (Fitzgerald 11). This is where the poor live, the new money and old money tend to look down on these people. In stand of saying this is where the poor lives, the author gives the town a name and ironically puts it right between West Egg and East Egg. "He stretched out his
