they will become aligned more with their technical field than with our organizational values. Any Marine can go to any Marine Corps unit and be successful. Not every specialist can succeed outside their domain.Capt Henry T. Elrod 1941The first Medal of Honor awarded to a Marine during World War II went to Capt. Elrod of VMF-211 for his actions in the defense of Wake Island. Capt. Elrod single handedly attacked a flight of 22 enemy aircraft, shooting down two attackers. Also making bombing and strafing runs on an enemy warship, he became the first to sink an enemy vessel. When all the squadron aircraft were destroyed by enemy fire, Capt Elrod organized a unit of ground troops in a beach defense that repulsed repeated enemy attacks. He was mortally wounded in action while protecting his men who were carrying ammunition to a gun emplacement.LtCol. Christopher RaibleAfghanistan 2012An hour after LtCol. The next day, as the French fell back through the Marines, a French officer advised Capt Lloyd Williams to withdraw his men Williams famously responded: “Retreat, hell! We just got here.” Although the battle lasted for 12 days and cost the Marines more casualties than in their entire history, they had stopped theGerman offensive and saved Paris.
