Montemayor PAIRED: INRW/ENGL 1301 – FALL 2017 Essay Sample (Introduction and 1st body paragraph) Last Name 1 Symbolism and Irony in Maupassant’s “The Necklace” Maupassant, in “The Necklace” depicts a time when class stature and financial status defined individuals. Ambition and the desire to overcome poverty to reach a higher status in life became priority to some. “The Necklace” is a story about a young woman who feels cheated by fate. She yearns to make her name in society and mingle with the rich individuals she admires. This story reveals a lesson about the dangers involved when one loses touch with reality and fails to exercise a limit to ambition. Through symbolism and irony, Guy de Maupassant shows the negative consequences of materialism.
