the American Sign Language and thought he had succeeded at it. Herbert Terrace started to work with Nim more and more, recording him using the signs. In the end of that though, he knew that Nim never formed a true sentence and would just merely repeat what the trainer had just done. Then in the 1994 Duane and Sue Rumbaugh took a closer look at Terrace’s attempts and realized that no ape showed any signs of language at all. Duane, Sue and Rose Sevcik continued to teach apes how to talk using the human language. They had a lot of ups and downs but then they started a project with a female ape named Matata. Matata was a different type of ape because her wild language was very different from normal apes, the researchers thought that maybe she would be able to understand more easily because she was using a different language. It didn’t turn out like they hopes and Matata could not get ahold of what they were trying to teach her. One good thing came from Matata though, she had a baby called Kanzi in everyday when she would train. He would always play around and wait until Matata was done and the trainers didn’t mind but they never trained him. For two years Kanzi was around when Matata was trying to learn and when they gave up on Matata, they let her go and they keptKanzi at the Language Research Center.
