According to historical writings Utnapishtim’s boat was squared and Noah’s boat was rectangular. The dimensions of Noah’s boat were said to be were “three hundred cubits, the arks length; fifty cubits, its width; thirty cubits, its height” (Lawall 43). For the flood that would soon be sent to the world would not leave any living creature standing. So in order to repopulate the world they were both instructed to take two of each kind of animal that existed in the world, a male and a female. A very interesting fact is that in both stories the arks landed on mountain tops at the end of the flood; mountain Ararat for Noah and mountain Nisir for Utnapishtim. But how would Noah and Utnapishtim know that the flood was already over and that there were other areas with visible land? They would both send out birds to fly.
