This conflict is exemplified by two historians named Samuel Gomers and N.F. Thompson. Thompson was opposed to unions while Gompers strongly defended them. Thompson, claiming he has no bias regarding class says that recognizing unions “Is so dangerous and subversive of government that it may justly be likened to the planting of deadly virus in the heart of organized society, death being its certain and speedy concomitant” [Johnson 91]. For this reason, people such as Gompers tried fighting for labor unions to give the 99% the power that they deserved. On the contrary, Gompers, who speaks out for the many oppressed people presents a strong counter argument. Gompers starts by offering the harsh realities of the working and living conditions of the oppressed people. At this point, men were lucky to be able to pay their rent, let alone put food on the table. Gompers takes a dig at the arrogant wealthy 1% saying “Probably you have not read within the past year of babies dying of starvation at their mothers’ breast” [Johnson 94].
