Era III suggest that your consciousness continues to live on and affect other people, even after death (Dosseydossey.com, 2018). At this time in my professional career and in my professional presence, I more align with Era II. It is proposed that in Era II physicians began to believe, with the help of scientific evidence, that feelings and emotions have an impact on our overall health and the diagnoses we are given (Dosseydossey.com, 2018). I wholeheartedly agree with this era and what it stands behind. This era gets automatic points from me because it is backed by scientific evidence. In myprofession, evidence based practice is key. We do things because we know it works, because we have studied and found out why it works and how it works. Also, as a person with a conscience, feelings, and emotions; I know those affect my overall health. Most people, myself included, find an outlet to cope with the feelings and sometimes it is not a “healthy” outlet. When I am stressed I eat, not just eat an extra snack, but I probably consume double the calories in the days that I am feeling extra stressed compared to a normal day. This overeating, overtime, has lead to weight gain, which in return has led to an 3
PROFESSIONAL PRESENCE AND INFLUENCE C 351increase in my cholesterol. I believe that emotions and feelings have one of the biggest effects onour overall heath and this why I feel my professional presence aligns with Era II. In the workplace, I often see how stress affects performance. I am a charge nurse on my unit and I have seen first-hand how stress affects the nurses I work with. For example, there is a nurse that works on my unit who is extremely competent, has a great bedside manner, and is overall a high performing nurse when she has one patient. When that same nurse is given a second patient to care, she completely loses all confidence in herself because of the stress that two patients brings her. She has made med errors and had patient complaints when caring for twopatients. The stress of having two patients, completely affects her performance and changes her entire performance for that time. As a leader, I am constantly trying to find ways to lower and eliminate stress in the workplace to make for a better working environment. I believe my belief in Era II is how I will continue to seek out changes to help. Influence on Nursing PracticeIn my professional presence, as well in my everyday life, I am mindful. I believe, being mindful that everyone reacts differently to different stressors is the best way to be a great leader. When I think of how being mindful at work can help, I think about my current role as Charge Nurse in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit. As the Charge Nurse on the unit, I do not regularly care for patients. When I see that one of the other nurses is stressed or feeling overwhelmed, I swoop in and take over for that nurse to let them have a little break. The stress of our job, as well as the acuity of the patients we care for, makes the work difficult.
