Ferraro and Briody tell us that even though relationship building may not conform to the typical America’s time frame, the inescapable truth is that because relationships are so important in the global arena, negotiations are unlikely to succeed without them (pg. 144). In order to build trust you have to develop a relationship with however it is you are trying to trust. Look at Boeing for example, Boeing has taken its time and built a trusting relationship with its suppliers. Can you imagine a deal with a supplier that provides airworthy aircraft parts going south because the two organizations didn’t establish a trust worthy relationship. Just imagine for a second the supplier of the aircraft tires for Boeing decided to remove a quality assurance step in the production line of the tires for Boeing’s aircraft because it cost them extra money they feel Boeing wasn’t worth spending on and a Boeing aircraft crashes while landing and injures if not kills passengers because the tire Boeing was supplied wasn’t of the highest quality. Relationships among organizations that plan on having business dealings with one another are more than just nice to have they are necessary. 5. What are five tips would you give a first-time negotiator to ensure that he or she is working efficiently and effectively with an interpreter? 1. Have an open mind to the beliefs and ways of life of the individuals you are negotiating with.
