historical writings, etc. Usually at the four-year college level you will be expected to provide a significant number of sources in support of your discussion. The biggest weakness of most college students is their inability to provide current (within the last five-seven years) research from scholarly sources, especially peer reviewed academic journals, in support of their views in the essay along with specific page numbers. The more you can use direct quotes from scholarly sources the more impressed your professor will be. College English teachers do not edit essays , which means that they do not point out all the errors in every location. Students must show that they can also find errors not directly pointed out and correct them also. If the argument demonstrates an understanding of the problems, the student will be permitted to revise. If it fails to convince, the student will not be permitted to revise. This approach is designed to ensure that a student learns about the pattern of problems in writing and take a professional approach to addressing them. Write good, well-crafted sentences: To be good writers, you are required to write well-constructed, demonstrative, assertive sentences. You should vary structure and avoid fragments, comma splices, run-ons, and mixed construction. If you are unable to write well-crafted sentences, you may fail the course. Therefore, if you have sentence problems in your writing, seek tutoring help immediately. Use correct grammar : Grammatical errors make writing difficult to read and result in poor communication. In college courses, the inability to use correct grammar is one reason for failing essays or the course. Therefore, you must demonstrate grammatical competency in these areas: a) fragments, b) comma splices/run-ons, c) pronoun reference and point of view, d) capital letters, e) commas, f) apostrophes, and g) parallelism. To do so, you must demonstrate competency by writing correctly edited essays. If your writing contains grammatical errors, you should seek tutoring assistance immediately. Follow directions : Following directions identifies responsibility and maturity ; in other words, following directions accurately and consistently indicates a student will be successful in upper division college classes and in responsible, professional positions (employment) after college. Therefore, you are asked to follow directions by addressing sources and for word processing in MLA 8 th Edition format with Full Text, Peer Reviewed Scholarly Journal articles, eBooks, from the MCCKC ProQuest , Academic Search Elite and JSTOR databases and/or Print books from the library.
