been used to suggest that Orange has Mike Johnson’s eyes. Billie Jean has filed a paternity suit claiming that Mike Johnson is the father, while Jerry Whiteheart has filed for parental visitation rights. All three parties have agreed to settle the issue on the television talk show, “Dr. Charles”, hosted by a celebrity psychiatrist. The show will be aired live tomorrow, and the producers have hired you as a DNA expert to analyze the CODIS marker results they have obtained in their paternity tests, prior to presenting them on the show. You have signed an extensive confidentiality agreement. Billie Jean happens to be African American, as does Jerry Whiteheart, while Mike Johnson is Hispanic. Below are the CODIS results from the samples submitted for the paternity test:   Genotype CODIS  Marker Billie Jean Orange Mike Johnson Jerry Whiteheart CSF1PO 10, 13 13, 14 8, 14 10, 14 FGA 24, 28 20, 24 19.2, 20 21, 24 THO1 7, 9.3 7, 9.3 7, 8 6, 9.3 TPOX 11, 11 6, 11 6, 8 11, 12 VWA 16, 18 13, 18 13, 18 15, 18 D3S1358 15, 18 15, 19 15.2, 19 16, 18 D5S818 9, 11 11, 12 12, 12 7, 10 D7S820 9, 12 8, 12 7, 8 8, 8 D8S1179 13, 17 17, 17 9, 17 9, 14 D13S317 12, 13 8, 12 8, 11 11, 14 D16S539 12, 13 11, 13 11, 14 9, 13 D18S81 17, 21 17, 15 14, 15 16, 18 D21S11 30, 36 30, 31.2 31.2, 32.2 29, 30 9

A211 Name:___Jane Hall_________________ 2a. First, the producers of the television show want to confirm that Billie Jean is indeed the mother of Orange (you never know….). Assuming Billie Jean is Orange’s mother, and based on the CODIS results, determine which allele Orange inherited from Billie Jean for each marker and record them in the table below. Remember that in some cases you may not be able to determine which of Billie Jean’s two alleles was inherited by Orange. (6 points)   Genotype Allele(s) from Billie Jean CODIS  Marker Billie Jean Orange   CSF1PO 10, 13 13, 14  13 FGA 24, 28 20, 24  24 THO1 7, 9.3 7, 9.3  7, 9.3 TPOX 11, 11 6, 11  11 VWA 16, 18 13, 18  18 D3S1358 15, 18 15, 19  15 D5S818 9, 11 11, 12  11 D7S820 9, 12 8, 12  12 D8S1179 13, 17 17, 17  17 D13S317 12, 13 8, 12  12 D16S539 12, 13 11, 13  13 D18S81 17, 21 17, 15  17 D21S11 30, 36 30, 31.2  30 Based on these results, could Billie Jean be the mother of Orange (yes or no)? ___Yes _________ 10

A211 Name:___Jane Hall_________________ 2b. Second, the producers of the television show have asked you if either man (Mike Johnson or Jerry Whiteheart) could be the father of Orange, assuming that Billie Jean is the mother. Based on the CODIS results, explain why each man could (or could not) be the father of Orange. Make sure to discuss all relevant CODIS markers. (6 points). Based on the CODIS results, the only man of the two who could be the father of Orange is Mike Johnson, because so many of the CODIS markers coincide. In order to be a parent of Orange, at least half of the alleles should be shared. While Jerry Whiteheart does share a similarity with Orange in the CSF1PO, D7S820, and D21S11 markers, some of these markers are in conflict with the genotype of Billie Jean who has already been proven to be the mother. Mike Johnson’s genotype, however, completely compliments Billie Jean’s genotype, which lines up to show that Billie Jean and Mike Johnson are Orange’s parents. For example in the D5S818   marker, Billie Jean has a 9,11 while Mike Johnson has a 12,12 and Jerry Whiteheart has a 7,10. Because Orange’s marker is 11,12, it completely rules out Whiteheart as an allele donor. So, the only possible combination to make up Orange’s genotype would be

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
