HN1240 Human Resource Management Final Review 9 Workplace Security: The events of September 2001, as well as various workplace shootings, have raised concerns about workplace safety. Security policies are being reassessed or developed to make workplaces safe. Emergency plans, better applicant screening and workplace assessment are more in the forefront than before. Security cameras and other measures are being used in workplaces to assist in these matters. Workplace Violence: Workplace violence has increased in recent years. There have been a number of accounts of terminated employees returning to the workplace and injuring or killing other employees. Workplace violence can take many forms such as pushing, shoving, fist-fighting, verbal threats, robbery, stalking, etc. Workplace violence can be between customers and employees as well as with other employees. Human resource specialists have to be proactive and develop zero-tolerance anti-violence policies. Ergonomics An area of health and safety that is attracting more attention is ergonomics. Ergonomics focuses on the interaction between employees and their total working environment. An ergonomics program seeks to ensure that the physical and behavioural characteristics of the employee are compatible with the work system. Recent research indicates that about 61 percent of employers provide some type of wellness initiative associated with ergonomics/workstation assessment. Consultants specializing in ergonomics can assist organizations in the design and implementation of the work system.
