Research QuestionAlthough conducting international projects brings plenty of advantages to the team members andthe company, there are indeed some challenges that a project manager may face while managing an international project. In the first place, the costs of conducting international projects are generally higher. That is, some of the team members may need to fly to other countries to complete their tasks. In the second place, cultural barriers may cause conflicts in the project team. Deborah (2017) stated that “Misunderstanding, confusion, wrong interpretations, etc.… arenormal if a team is composed of different nationalities.” To be more specific, every country has its own culture, especially the working philosophy, which may create barriers in a project team. In the third place, foreign laws and political issues may also cause some problems while conducting an international project. Moreover, it can also be tricky for a project manager to manage third party companies. To face these challenges, there is plenty of decisions which a project manager needs to make and tons of factors required considered. As a result, it is essential for project managers to learn what are the major challenges associated with managing an international project team. To be more specific, in an environment that has become increasingly global, there are more parties involved and less information available at any point. This makes it much harder to identify, quantify, prioritize and mitigate risk for better decision making (Eric, 2012). The following are some of the major challenges associated with managing an international project team.Language.Project managers may find it difficult to manage project teams that speak different languages. Although English is used as a common language between people whose mother tongue are different, not everyone can speak English fluently. For instance, not everyone can discuss a complicated topic in English. Moreover, Ten Six (2011) indicated that “even between US and UK English there are differences that sometimes need explaining.” Language differences not only make it difficult for team members to communicate, but it also increases the risks of wasting time and money. Moreover, the team may start working on their own and create confusion if the team does not communicate well.On the other hand, using the same language does not mean the communication is effective. Different people tend to have different ways of expressing their opinions. Germans for example usually give direct feedback without sugarcoating, while in the US it common to give criticism
