Occurs more frequently in older adolescents Excessive use of laxatives or diuretics Compulsive exercising Bulimia and anorexia may overlap May result in anemia and menstrual irregularities -Fluid and electrolyte imbalance from frequent vomiting- may cause cardiac arrhythmias, tetany, and severe abdominal pain Erosion of tooth enamel from vomiting Tears and ulcers in oral mucosa Esophagitis with sore throat and difficulty swallowing Acne Vulgaris : common skin infection in adolescence that involves sebaceous glands and associated hair follicles on the face, neck, and upper trunk -Wide variation between mild to severe (this type will cause permanent scarring) Comedones: whiteheads or blackheads with non-inflammatory collection of sebum Inflammatory : hair follicle swells and ruptures Propionibacterium acne breaks down sebum-inflammation Staphylococcal organisms invade and create pustules Infectious Mononucleosis Caused by the Epstein-Barr virus and affects the lymphocytes Common in adolescents and young adults Usually mild and self-limiting but complications may occur Transmitted by - direct contact with infected saliva, airborne droplets, or blood -Incubation period 4-6 weeks Manifestations : sore throat, headache, fever, fatigue (malaise), enlarged lymph nodes and spleen, rash on the trunk, increased lymphocytes and monocytes in the blood, atypical T- lymphocytes, and positive heterophil antibody test Disorder of Sexual Development Chromosomal Disorders: Klinefelter syndrome - affects males owing to the presence of an additional X chromosome instead of XY it’s XXY- mental retardation is common finding, most boys are diagnosed at puberty because small testes and secondary male sexual characteristics Turner Syndrome- a monosomy X in which one X chromosome is missing, affecting sexual development in females- abnormalities commonly occur in the heart and genitals. Hormone treatment is a beneficial treatment Tumors: Testicular tumors are not common but do affect young adult males in 20’s and 30’s. When tumor develops it’s usually malignant distinguished by unilateral, hard mass that isn’t painful Menstrual Abnormalities: delayed menarche or primary amenorrhea is the absence of menstruation after age 17 usually due to an abnormality in reproductive organs or abnormality in pituitary gland or hypothalamus. D ysmenorrhea refers to the discomfort that occurs in varying degrees during first or second day of menstruation Chapter 9: Pregnancy Complications
