RGP Task 1: Professional Accountability The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) provides health coverage to more than 100 million people through Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and the Health Insurance Marketplace. The CMS seeks to strengthen and modernize the Nation’s health care system, to provide access to high quality care and improved health at lower costs (usa.gov). The functionality of the 2 organizations are different because while the FDA regulates the manufacturing, marketing of supplies to the U.S. and is responsible for securing safety of drug and food for the U.S., The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid are geared towards protecting the public and safety of the people. Medicare and Medicaid ensure guidelines are followed for public safety. D1. Discuss how the two regulatory agencies influence your professional nursing practice. The Food and Drug Administration influences the way I take care of my patients by regulating the drugs, blood and supplies I use on them. The supplies are ensured to be safe to use thus protecting my license and allowing me to provide the best care for my patients. The CMS regulates where I work requiring the hospital to follow certain guidelines for reimbursement. There are certain goals to be met for the hospital to get the most payback. D1a. Discuss your role as a patient advocate in promoting safety when a patient has requested to use an alternative therapy. According to The Mayo Clinic, doctors are embracing evidence-based alternative therapies, often combining them with mainstream therapies to treat disease and maintain health 9

Some examples are classified by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), natural products, mind and body practices and other integrative approaches like naturopathy and ancient healing systems (mayoclinic.org). I am a patient advocate first and foremost as a nurse. I am to ensure good outcomes with patient safety, proper education that is received well, promote independence and autonomy. To make sure my patient is making the best-informed decision, I would learn everything I could about the options my patient has. I would promote autonomy in respect to their wishes, but I would make sure the patient is well-educated on the alternative therapy and if it has any interference with their existing medical care. I must also be certain that cultural beliefs are acknowledged and integrated with the patient’s care. Discuss the purpose of the Nurse Practice Act in your state and its influence on your professional practice. The Board of Nursing uses an article called the Nurse Practice Act to develop rules and regulations nurses use to practice safely. Requirements for each state such as education, licensing and disciplinary actions when requirements are not met. As stated in the Nurse Practice Act, section 90-171.19 Legislative findings include that the General Assembly of North Carolina
