relationship, through the middle, to the beginning of the relationship. Splitting up Joel’s memory sequences are real-time scenes involving the doctor’s employees. Although the doctor’s employees seem to be unrelated to the storyline, I thought it was interesting in how all the characters merge together at the end. I noticed throughout the movie how the director used racking focus. I saw this on one of the beach scenes. Joel was in focus, and the beach in the background was out of focus, then it switched. I also saw use of selective focus, where all focus was on a character, for example Joel, in order to draw the viewer’s attention to him. Distance in terms of framing was prominent in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind . A variety of different shots were used throughout the film. For example, an extreme long shot was used in a scene showing the beach, with Joel and Clementine walking along it. Medium long
shots and medium shots were used in the film as well. A medium long shot was used when Joel was talking to the doctor about Clementine’s procedure. A medium shot was used in many of the scenes where Joel and Clementine were just talking. A close up shot was used while Joel was asleep, with the helmet on for the memory-wiping procedure. These diverse camera shots made the framework interesting in terms of the distance in each scene. As a whole, I enjoyed the movie, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I liked how it was generic in the storytelling, and the nonlinear storyline kept the movie interesting. I liked how the memories were presented from the end of the relationship to the beginning, because we got to see the relationship between Joel and Clementine go from a struggle, to a relationship full of love. It made me think that the second time they try making things work, it will work out. This is my favorite movie we have watched so far because I love the actors and actress and I really enjoyed the story.
