07:20Sex & Obscene Gestures
07:25PROFESSOR DANE ARCHER But not all gesture are offensive. Obscene gestures clearly
are. Some of these are hostile, some are ridiculing & some involved a gentle put
down. There are three basic types of obscene gesture. The first are angry obscene gestures.
Best known American example is of course he finger. The second type of obscene gesture

has to do with homosexuality or a gay lifestyle although not found everywhere in United
States this is such a gesture, the limp wrist. The third type of gesture has to do with infidelity
& unfaithful girlfriend, boyfriend or spouse although not always recognized this children's
gesture often done in school photographs derives from a European gesture about
infidelity. Obscene gestures are strongly link to gender. For example angry obscene gestures
are much more likely to be performed by man and by a woman. That's what makes this
picture portraying a British obscene gesture particularly strike. There are other gender
differences as well. For example gestures about homosexuality are usually gestures about
male homosexuality although this is not true in every society. In addition gestures about
infidelity are usually gestures about women's sexual behavior. Gestures about male infidelity
are virtually unknown. In some societies it's interesting that there are as many six or seven
obscene gestures and sometimes even obscene whistles. While in other countries the
Northern European countries such as the Netherlands, Switzerland, Norway there's not a
single native obscene gesture although foreign obscene gestures are recognized in those
countries.
