Secondly, the main topic on which the Chronicle focuses is the story of the Varangian’s conversion to Christianity. The author does not write much detail in terms of early Rus’ history, but he goes into great detail recording the events leading up to and describing the conversion. This shows that the author’s main interest surrounds the topic of religion. The detail that he gives in regard to the conversion demonstrates his belief that the conversion is the most important event in early Russian history, which shows us that a monk would best fit the description of the author. Asside from being a monk, the author is also a Rus’. This is evident in the authors description of Apostle Paul, “Paul is the teacher of the Slavic race, from which we Rus’ too are sprung, even so the Apostle Paul is the teacher of us Rus’…” (Primary Chronicle, 9). The Chronicler identifies himself as a Rus’.
