Carl Bosch, a German chemical engineer, determined how to apply the reaction to produce ammonia on an industrial scale. The Haber Bosch Process -Molecules of nitrogen and hydrogen break apart when they come in contact with the metal catalyst. The atoms of nitrogen and hydrogen are highly reactive, and they quickly combine to produce molecules of ammonia.

The Production of Sulfuric Acid: Sulfuric acid is industrially used in applications such as manufacturing chemicals, refining ores, and processing wastewater. -The contact process, uses vanadium oxide as a catalyst of one step in the process. Without the catalyst, the reaction in step 2 would decrease the overall reaction rate. The catalyst is written above the reaction arrow because it is not consumed during the reaction. Xylan makes paper brown. Xylanese breaks down Xylan, it is produced by organisms such as fungi, and it can degrade cell walls of plants. Chlorine based bleaches can be used to break down Xylan, but they are harmful for the environment, so Xylanese allows for smaller concentration of bleach in the process of whitening paper. Use of biocatalysts in producing paper means fewer chemicals are needed in the process resulting in less energy consumed. Amylase is used to produce starch that is added to paper which improves the strength of the paper and increases its ability to withstand friction of erasers.
