Characteristics of Training Programs: Diversity Representation – NEED FOR GREATER DIVERSITY o Professional fields of psychology lack proportionally representative cultural diversity (less than 8% minority representation in school psych) o Women represent almost 80% of SP graduate student population, 45% faculty, and more than 70% practitioners o Increase in women is consistent with women’s increased publication in school psych journals o Differences between men and women in terms of tenure, salary, rank, etc. but bc of more years of experience o Individuals with disabilities representation is expected to grow Teacher Certification and Experience o No significant relationship between teacher experience and school psychologists’ success o Number of depts. requiring teacher cert fell dramatically, no state licensing boards require it Common Levels of Prep o Most psychologists do not hold doctoral degrees o 80.5% hold specialist or higher level of prep Enrollment Patterns o Decreased in 80s then increased at specialist and doctoral levels, substantial decrease in masters Program Selection: Level of Training Needed o Pursue specialist degree or higher o 60 graduate hours minimum in NASP approved training program or through state agency with NASP standards o Content of program and its accreditation status are more important that the title of the degree offered o Doctoral degree seldom required for SP Little financial advantage to pursuing No more competent to do SP job Program Characteristics: Models of Training: o Master Models: Scientist – Practitioner (S – P Model): adopted for clinical psychology training from Boulder Conf.
