The desire Connie has to be a mother vs. Her lack of family and losing her child -In Chapter 5, Connie is exposed to the new technology that allows babies to be born in tube. She becomes extremely angry and Luciente explains that this needs to be possible in order for there to be equality among the sexes. Since only women can give birth, this separates them
greatly from men. Therefore, birthing of children was invented scientifically and the role of motherhood was taken away from women so that anyone could be a mother, even an man. This idea of universal childbearing is difficult for Connie to grasp because she once had a daughter. This chapter ends with her mourning over the loss of her very own child. Her niece, Dolly and her brother, Luis don’t provide her with the guidance and support she needs, instead they leave her in the asylum. 2. Conflict between the protagonist vs. the official authority (the hospital)
