One of the challenges teachers face with curriculum mapping is undue pressure of being in compliance with state standards was stated by the teacher I interviewed. It is a challenge that may plague many throughout the K-12 educational system. Collaboration is key to successfully delivering the curriculum mapping process. Teachers in DISD participate in bi-weekly PLC’s (Professional Learning Communities). During the PLC time, teachers collaborate on the effectiveness of the curriculum taught and assess data from common assessments. Teachers need to have knowledgeable, cohesive and open-minded leadership that will work with teachers through the curriculum mapping process. As an instructional leader, it was very informative to hear from a teacher about their perspective on curriculum mapping. With the teachers being the ones actually delivering the curriculum, what they need from leaders and stakeholders is very important. Wiggins, G., & McTighe, J. (2007). Schooling by design: Mission, action, and achievement. Alexandria, VA: Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development Unit 8 Discussion 1 The Next Generation Science Standards are K–12 science content standards. Standards set the expectations for what students should know and be able to do. The standards were developed by states to improve science education for all students. These standards give local educators the flexibility to design classroom learning experiences that stimulate students’ interests in science and prepares them for college and careers. A high-quality science education means that students will develop an in- depth understanding of content and develop key skills—communication, collaboration, inquiry, problem solving, and flexibility—that will serve them throughout their educational and professional lives in science related careers. One particular important science standard is as follows- HS-PS1-3 Matter and its Interactions Plan and conduct an investigation to gather evidence to compare the structure of substances at the bulk scale to infer the strength of electrical forces between particles. When looking at the importance of stakeholders truly understanding the standards in the curriculum mapping process is paramount. As education has become more standards- based, Schweitzer states there has been an has increased interest in curriculum mapping, especially among teachers who want to compare their curriculum to national or state standards or even to the curriculum of other educators who teach the same subject and grade level. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
