Debatably the most damaging war to America’s reputation as a superpower was the Vietnam war. Along with the high cost and death toll, this war lasted 20 years. These variables provoked extensive war fatigue within America which entailed violent backlash and diminishing faith in political leaders. By learning from mistakes in these “bad wars,” America will hopefully consider long-term effects when considering future wars. The moral cause for fighting in World War II and its relative profit to the United States in economic and social terms made it a good war, but mistakes in the Spanish-American War, World War I, and the Vietnam War present concerns for the future. Considering the rash actionsof America in the previously stated wars, there is a possibility that America’s focus on personal interests during international tension and negotiation could cause a declaration of war. In modern day, the growing tensions between the United States, China, and Russia could be the first step towards war if America does not proceed cautiously. I believe there will not be a WorldWar III in my lifetime due to the widespread realization that this potential war would be nuclear and destroy civilization. Despite this, it still is important to study the actions of American diplomacy as a single voice could prevent another world war.
