This preview shows page 7 - 10 out of 18 pages.

In comparison if we have a look at the book of Judges, and how foreigners were treated then we conclude the following: In Judges 19:16-30 we read of an old man who saw this traveller on the square and went over to ask him where he is staying. As we read further, we come to understand that the traveller give in and go stay with the old man. This shows us that the culture is more or less the same as in Ruth. But as we read on, we see that the worthless men from the city came to have sex with this stranger. Furthermore in Judges 20-21 we read of how Israel defeated all the other nations, close relatives with the strength and help from God, to stop the evil doings of the godless people in the land. In both books we find that people are good to foreigners and care for their needs, but at the end God comes through and take it to another level. There were evil people in these books, but still God came through, Albert Barnes (1798-1870). 4.3 Levirate Marriage in Ruth 3

Although, according to Jewish tradition, Samuel, Nathan and Gad played a part in the recording of events of this book, which is suggested by 1 Chronicles 29:29. Regarding the date, it is reasonable to date the book somewhere between 931 and 722 B.C. When we look at 1 Samuel 25:1; 28:13-20, it is conclusive that certain parts were written after Samuel’s death and even after the division of Solomon’s kingdom (1 Samuel 2:6). The events cover the time from the ministry of Eli to the close of David’s reign. Taking 931 B .
