140 fantasy system Interwoven sex ual fantasies that expr ess individual s' deepest sex ual m ot ivation s, pleasures, fears, and yea rning s for em ot ional connections with others. HUM AN SEXUALlTY WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND? Q: So many of my straight men friends talk about their sexual fantasies either involving two women having sex or having sex with two women at the same time. Why are these particular fantasies such a turn-on for some men? A: A good deal of male heterosexual porn expresses the fantasy of a man ha ving sex with more than one woman or the image of two w omen sexually interacting. One fantasy may be about men wanting to dominate w omen . The second fantasy may arouse a man to want to "have his way with women:'This implies a deeper feeling that the women, whom the man thinks may be lesbians, may need a "real man" to make them into "honest women:' Others suggest that many men like to see a woman masturbating, and other men get aroused, as do some women, watching t wo men enjoying gay sex. Sexual fantasies take many twists and turns, some of which may be based on power differences bet ween the sexes. Researchers do not know if this is positive or negative for people's spontaneous and creative use of sexual fantasy in their intimate relationships. It does seem paradoxical that in the United States people's most intensely private activity, sexual fantasy, may now be played out in virtual public settings on the Internet instead of in the bedroom. Sexual excitement appears to be as unique in each person as fingerprints (Stoller, 1979). In his studies of sexual excitement, Stoller was fascinated by how people would weave their sexual fantasies into a fantasy system that expressed their deep- est sexual motivations, pleasures, fears, and yearnings for emotional connection with others. Stoller believes these fantasy systems combine rapidly moving images with feelings that switch between danger and pleasure. These fantasy systems are unique to each person. Humans are fortunate because we have this ability to create sexual fantasies. In fact, sexual fantasy is an innate characteristic of humans, just as is the capacity for language or the ability to make tools. This unique capacity contributes to our ability to enjoy sexual pleasure in a way that other animals cannot. Through sexual fantasy, humans connect to others as individuals, as sexual beings, and as sources of pleasure. Everything that we have learned about sexual fantasy as a human capacity suggests that it has a positive and significant role in stable, mature relationships.
