Think about your own job. Are you able to move to other roles in the organisation? Do you think you will like job rotation? If yes, why so? If no, why not? Please click here to login to your Library account and access the Newslink database. Search for the article titled “Job rotation a good way to boost productivity” in The Straits Times on March 8, 2013. When you read the article, think of how work redesign can improve your motivation to perform at work. 2.2.2 Job Enrichment Aside from job rotation, job enrichment can also increase motivation. Job enrichment increases the degree to which the worker controls the planning, execution, and evaluation of work. By allowing an employee to do a complete activity or by giving employees greater freedom and independence, they may become more motivated at work. For example, organisations may give employees the ability to plan how they wish to do their tasks, a task that was formerly reserved for management. You should now read Robbins and Judge (2015), Chapter 8, pp. 250-252 to learn more about job redesign.

BUS103 STUDY UNIT 3 SU3 11 2.3 Alternative Work Arrangement Besides redesigning jobs to motivate employees, organisations can also support alternative work arrangement. Such arrangements are especially popular among employees who have personal commitments such as caring for children or elderly parents. 2.3.1 Flextime Flextime provides employees with some discretion over when they arrive and leave work. For example, flextime will allow Mrs Tan to work from 7am to 4pm instead of regular hours of 9am to 6pm. This flexibility allows Mrs Tan to spend more time with her children after they finish classes at school. Do note that flextime is not applicable to all jobs. It will be hard for sales personnel in a department store to choose when they want to arrive and leave work. 2.3.2 Job Sharing Job sharing is the arrangement that allows for two or more individuals to split a traditional full-time job. This is particularly attractive to working parents or to those who want to contribute to the workforce on a part-time basis. 2.3.3 Telecommuting Telecommuting is the arrangement where employees can do some or all of their work at home on a computer that is linked to their office. This is very popular with parents who want to combine work with their parenting role. However, there may be some disadvantages. Employees who are not at their desks may miss meetings and not share in informal workplace interactions, indirectly affecting their chances for wage raises or promotions. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
