When collecting a blood sample via heel stick the collector should first identify the patient and wear gloves, and the foot should be pre-warmed and properly cleaned with alcohol. The babies foot should be firmly but gently held. The puncture should be done on the most lateral areas of the foot with a lancet, and the first droplet of blood should not be collected. A capillary tube can be used for collection. Blood flow must be halted, and gauze or a bandage can be applied. And, last but not least, the specimen should be properly labeled. 6. I would ask the patient his or her name and date of birth and check their identification band. If I received the appropriate answer, I would put on gloves, palpate the arm in the anticubital area, clean the area once a good vessel was found, align the tubes in the order in which they are to be drawn so that I do not make any mistakes, tie the tourniquet, and proceed to collect the specimens buy inserting the needle bevel up in the patient’s arm at the appropriate angle so that the tourniquet in not on the patient for longer than one minute.
