348.097 mg/dl which is well beyond three standard deviations. When evaluating the QC 3 results, the mean value of the reference range was 100 mg/dl with one standard deviation being 10 mg/dl and the acceptable range between 80 mg/dl and 120 mg/dl. The QC 3 value was 193.08 mg/dl which is also well beyond three standard deviations. Since QC values are considered acceptable when within two standard deviations above or below the mean, and the QC values obtained exceed the 3 standard deviation control limit, the results should be rejected. So since the QC results did not fall within two standard deviations of the reference ranges, the patient results cannot be verified and given to the doctor. However, if the QC results did fall within two standard deviations of the reference ranges, the cholesterol concentration would have been normal, for desirable cholesterol levels are below 200 mg/dl and the patient sample contained 174.740 mg/dl of cholesterol. If the results were to have been acceptable and the cholesterol concentration obtained was too high, the results could have been indicative of an increased risk for stroke and heart disease or the presence of clogged arteries while low cholesterol concentration could have been indicative of dietary problems or certain cancers. The variability in the QC results could have been indicative of errors performed during the analysis. Perhaps, there were measurement errors with the reagent volumes or pipetting errors which resulted in the Westgard rule violations. Or perhaps, the cuvettes and the pipettes were unclean.
