A group is defined as two or more individuals, interacting and interdependent, who have come together to achieve particular objectives . Groups can be either formal or informal. No single reason explains why individuals join groups. Since most people belong to a number of groups, it’s obvious that different groups provide different benefits to their members. Some reasons people join groups are for: security, status, self-esteem, affiliation, power, or goal achievement. The communication that takes place between members of any group is known as group dynamics. Each member of the group will have an effect on the group dynamics, based on their motivation for participating, their similarity to other group members, the maturity of the group members in expressing their feelings, and the goal of the group. A formal group is a designated work group defined by the organization’s structure. These groups have designated work assignments that establish tasks. In formal groups, the behaviors that one should engage in are stipulated by and directed toward organizational goals. The three members making up an airline flight crew are an example of a formal group. Informal groups are alliances that are neither formally structured nor organizationally determined. These groups are natural formations in the work environment that appear in response to the need for social contact. Three employees from different departments who regularly eat lunch together are an example of an informal group.

determined by the organization chart. An elementary school principal and her 12 teachers form a command group, as do the director of postal audits and his five inspectors. Task groups, also organizationally determined, represent those working together to complete a job task. A task group’s boundaries are not limited to its immediate hierarchical superior. It can cross command relationships. For example, if a college student is accused of a campus crime, it may require communication and coordination among the dean of academic affairs, the dean of students, the registrar, the director of security, and the student’s adviser. An interest group represents those working together to attain a specific objective with which each member is concerned. People who may or may not be aligned into common command or task groups may belong to an interest group. Employees who band together to support a peer who has been fired, to have their vacation schedule altered, or to seek increased fringe benefits represent the formation of a united body to further their common interest A friendship group is a group brought together because the members share one or more common characteristics . Social alliances, which frequently extend outside the work situation, can be based on similar age, support for the same football team, having attended the same college, or the holding of similar political views, to name just a few such characteristics.
