Buel and Buel’sbiography   of   MaryFish (1736–1818)makes  little   effort  toplace (5) her story in the context ofrecent   historiography   onwomen. Lebsock, meanwhile,   attempts notonly  to write the history ofwomen   in   one   southerncommunity, but   also toredirect two   decades   ofhistoriographical debate as towhether women (10) gained or lost status inthe   nineteenth   century   ascompared with theeighteenth century.Although  both   books   offerthe reader the opportunity toassess this controversyregarding   women’s   status,only Lebsock’s deals with itdirectly. She examines (15) several different aspectsof   women’s   status,   helpingto   refine   and   resolve   theissues.   She   concludes   thatwhile women gainedautonomy   in   some   areas, especially   in   the   privatesphere,  they lost it in manyaspects   of   the   economicsphere. More importantly, (20) she   shows  that   thedebate   itself depends   onframe of reference: in manyrespects, women  lost powerin   relation   to   men,   forexample,   as   certain   jobs(delivering babies, supervising   schools)   weretaken   over   by   men.   Yetwomen also gained power in (25)   comparison   with   theirprevious   status,   owning   ahigher   proportion   of   realestate,   for   example. Incontrast,  Buel   and   Buel’sbiography   provides ampleraw material for  questioningthe myth, fostered by somehistorians,   of   a   colonialgolden age in the (30)   eighteenth   century butdoes   not  give   the   readermuch guidance in analyzingthe controversy overwomen’s status. ????: ?????---????????---??????????:??
