there is another Great Egret but it is completely black and beneath the main Great Egret without any distinguishable features with its head pointed down and horizontal instead of up and vertical as if symbolizing some sort of minor defeat or retreat. The principal of horizontal and vertical designs is very helpful in determining the overall visual effect of this work as well as the precise color choice used for the background and animal. The design tools used by the artist have helped the audience narrow in its focus and create an almost circular motion visually on the main focus but also allude to the silhouette of the other bird. Interpretation Michael Golden states that his images are metaphors of the realities he experiences. He says that he blends nature, science, and geometric design and mainly his experiences from nature after being born blind in one eye, he now sees the world as flat, and two-dimensional perspective. I believe he is trying to convey that he paints what he really feels based off of what he has experienced in his life and every element of the artwork is much more symbolic and meaningful

than what they are initially painted to look like. To me, the silhouette to him is actually the main focus of the painting. Although almost unseen, it is this unseen element he has had to experience his whole life. He has unseen obstacles with his, and his sister’s health, as well as physically being unable to see from one eye. But these obstacles do not stop him as the Great Egret is highlighted and positioned vertical for a reason and that is to demonstrate the victory over these obstacles he has had to face. I connected with this image instantly because it is just a lone bird. In my life I have had to grow up very fast, and that means I have had to grow up on my own sometimes metaphorically and literally. By just being alone that does not necessarily mean unstoppable but a challenge given to prove one’s strength which is the journey you see the Great Egret about to partake on his journey wherever it is soaring. I have great feelings of hope while looking at this photo. The darkness reminds me of the past as it is uncontrollable and cannot be changed. Although the past may be dark, the future is always light for you are change you want to see in the future. And this bird, or Michael is choosing to take on any challenge presented and show the bold, strength his symbolically has to spread his wings and fly. However, if you are to
