Therefore, a club would not meet the time criteria because it would require more time from project leaders, teachers, and students. An effective approach would require the smallest amount of outside resources. Both a club and an assembly would necessitate external resources such as teacher supervisors and physical materials (i.e. projectors, pamphlets, worksheets, etc). The approach would reach the “No Additional Skills Required” criteria if the project leader did not need to invest additional efforts in learning new skills rather than implementing the project. Approaches such as a website and an assembly would require a variety of specific skills, such as website design (technological skills) and large scale event planning. Personal interaction is the direct “face time” between the students and the project leaders. A website only involves interaction between the student and the computer, and an assembly only involves interaction between the speaker and an entire audience. An effective approach would be able to show progress through measurable outcomes. It would be difficult to measure students’ understanding with a website because the data would be unreliable, and because of time constraints it would be unrealistic to measure understanding during an assembly. Virginia teachers are responsible for preparing students for the state regulated test, and any approach that would occur during the school day would interfere with SOL preparation. An assembly would need to be held during the school day, thus it would take away from valuable SOL preparation time. In order to meet the distance criteria the approach would need to require little or no traveling to the location. An assembly would require a onetime drive to our school in Crozet. However, a club would require multiple trips to the school. In order to

meet the demographic criteria, the approach would need to guarantee that the targeted audience was reached. A website would not ensure this because there would be no proof of who receives the information.
