Although I think it would be important to help this dying man see and say goodbye to his lover, it would be unethical for me do so and I would respectfully decline. Beneficence is doing good and the right thing for the patient. It is not my duty to tell his wife a lie for him. The code of ethics states that the nurse should advocate for their patients, and if this favor was part of my duty than I would be happy to do so but it is not. ( Ethical Practice, n.d.). Non-maleficence is doing no harm. Harm can be intentional or unintentional. Although Mr. Newcomb may be upset by my declination of his request, I would not be doing him harm or hurting him. Autonomy occurs when the nurse accepts the patient as a person who is unique and has the innate right to have their own opinions, beliefs, perspectives and values. Declining the 2
